Como La Flor: 50 Years of Selena

On April 16, 1971, a superstar was born in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Over the next 23 years, Selena Quintanilla became a top name in the music industry, especially within the Tejano music community. After her tragic death in March of 1995, and at such a young age, Selena’s legacy has continued over the past 26 years and will continue to live on in the hearts of so many for decades to come.

I know she continues to be one of my favorite performers! Not only for her voice but also for her genuine performances on the stage. An expert in connection with the audience, she just drew folks into her world and it was joy to be there with her.

On my YouTube channel, Master of Voice, I’ve been honored to review a few of her performances since I started the channel just over a year and a half ago.

The first one I reacted to was the “Disco Medley” which she sang to start off what would be her last televised concert. Mainly featuring songs from her Amor Prohibido album, it was held at the Houston Astrodome in 1995 and featured her performances in that iconic purple jumpsuit.

Then, just as the year 2020 started, I featured the last song of that concert – “Como La Flor” – which was the first song I ever knew of hers way back in the early 90s. It’s such a great song with a nice beat and this performance is magical. My reaction video now has 800,000 views and counting. Knowing it was the last song of that concert just weeks before her death is heartbreaking.

Late last year, I was so happy to get back another reaction of Selena. This time, to a wonderful performance of “No Me Queda Más” at the 1994 Tejano Music Awards. She was so at ease on the stage and her voice was excellent when singing such a beautiful song.

And just this week, not realizing it would be the 50th anniversary of her birth, I was excited to feature her performance of “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”, again from that legendary final concert in 1995. It’s such a fun song and you can see the joy in her shining out into the world.

I’m so eager to continue featuring all of the greatest performances from Selena. That we have the videos to remember her by and keep her legacy alive (along with so many other superstar musical artists) is one of my favorite parts of being a YouTube vocal coach reactor. I know great singing and performing when I see it and Selena ranks high on my list of the most stellar performers that have ever lived.

The world is a much better place after fifty years of music and love from the Queen of Tejano Music – Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

More videos of Selena coming soon on the Master of Voice channel! Thanks for your continued support! Please don’t forget to follow my social media channels and here’s my Ko-fi page for those interested in supporting my content.
